Quick Summary (TL;DR)

Mealybugs are magnets to Hibiscus plants. Because they hide in tight crevices and have a waxy coating, contact sprays wash right off them. TATA Tafgor (Dimethoate) is a systemic insecticide that enters the plant juices. When the mealybug bites the plant, it ingests the Tafgor and dies.

Why Are Hibiscus Plants Magnets for Mealybugs?

Hibiscus plants produce a large amount of sugary sap, making them the ultimate feast for sap-sucking insects. Mealybugs cluster around the tender new buds and stems, draining the plant’s energy until the flower buds drop off before opening.

Your Sunday Morning Tafgor Routine

To completely eradicate a hidden mealybug infestation, you need a disciplined approach:

  1. Prune: First, cut off the heavily infested tips and dispose of them in a sealed bag. Do not compost them.
  2. Mix: Dilute TATA Tafgor at a ratio of 2ml per 1 liter of water.
  3. Spray: Early on a Sunday morning (before the sun gets harsh), spray the entire plant. Focus heavily on the stems and the undersides of the leaves where the bugs hide.
  4. Repeat: Because Tafgor breaks the life cycle, repeat this exact process 7 days later to kill any newly hatched nymphs.

Expert Tip

Expert Tip: Dimethoate (Tafgor) works systemically, meaning even if you miss spraying a hidden bug directly, they will consume the chemical when they feed on the sap the next day!
