Quick Summary (TL;DR)
Monocil 36% SL (Monocrotophos) is a highly potent, professional-grade agricultural insecticide. While it is incredibly effective against stubborn pests like Stem Borers, it should strictly be reserved for ornamental plants and large trees. It must NOT be sprayed on vegetables or fruits that are close to harvest.
Understanding Technical-Grade Insecticides
Monocil is an organophosphate insecticide. It is highly systemic and has a very strong knockdown effect on a massive variety of chewing, biting, and boring insects. However, with great power comes the need for extreme responsibility.
When is it Safe to Use Monocil?
Monocil is the “heavy artillery” of garden care. It should be used when an infestation is completely out of control and standard treatments have failed.
- Ornamental Plants: Safe and highly effective for use on Roses, Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, and other non-edible plants.
- Large Trees: Excellent for treating massive infestations in mature trees where complete canopy spraying is impossible.
Technical Safety First
- The Harvest Waiting Period: Do not use Monocil on kitchen gardens (tomatoes, chillies, leafy greens) within 21-30 days of harvesting. The chemical takes a long time to break down inside the plant tissue.
- Toxicity Warning: It is highly toxic to birds and beneficial insects like bees. Apply only as a last resort and follow all safety protocols outlined in our Pesticide Safety 101 guide.
